The Stress Brain Programme

Course Overview: Stress, the Brain, and Sensory Processing

Enhancing Learning for Special Needs Children

Every day, educators, classroom assistants, caring assistants, and medical professionals step into environments where learning, behaviour, and neurological processing collide. To truly support children with special educational needs, we must look beyond surface-level behaviours and understand the internal storms that shape their daily experiences.

This course, Stress, the Brain, and Sensory Processing, is designed as a compassionate, science-backed roadmap for those on the front lines of care and education.

The Narrative Journey

Our journey begins by demystifying sensory processing—the complex way our nervous systems receive, organise, and respond to information from the world around us. Participants will learn to define sensory processing and recognise its common manifestations, shifting their perspective from “this child is acting out” to “this child is overwhelmed.”

From there, we dive into the neuroscience of overwhelm. We will explore exactly how stress impacts brain functioning, temporarily “hijacking” the prefrontal cortex—the brain’s centre for logic, decision-making, and learning. By understanding this neurological shift, educators and caregivers will grasp why a stressed brain simply cannot learn, and why emotional safety must always precede academic progress.

Because stress is not a one-way street, the course shines a light on both sides of the caregiving equation. Participants will learn to identify the subtle and overt signs of stress not just in children, but also in adults. Recognising our own stress responses is the first step to co-regulation, the process by which a calm adult helps soothe an overwhelmed child.

This course is deeply practical. We move from theory to action by equipping you with concrete, classroom-tested tools to proactively manage stress and support learning. You will walk away with strategies to modify sensory environments, establish calming routines, and build resilient support systems.

Finally, we shift our focus to sustainable progress. Real growth in special education rarely happens in giant leaps; it happens in micro-moments. Participants will learn how to celebrate small wins and master the art of pacing, tailoring their approaches to respect and accommodate each child’s unique learning curve.
